Turks turban

Turk’s Turban is a frost-tender, warm-season winter squash that needs full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Plant after the danger of frost has passed, once soil temperatures reach about 65–70°F (18–21°C). Sow seeds about 1 inch deep, spacing hills 6–8 feet apart because the vines can spread 10–15 feet.

Growing conditions: Provide about 1 inch of water per week, especially during flowering and fruit set, and water at the soil level to help prevent mildew. Add compost before planting and feed during early vine growth. Good airflow helps reduce powdery mildew; monitor for squash bugs, vine borers, and cucumber beetles. Bees are important for pollination, so avoid disturbing flowers during peak activity.

Harvest and storage: Harvest before a hard frost when the rind is hard, fully colored, and resists a fingernail, leaving at least 2 inches of stem. Cure in a warm, dry, ventilated place for 10–14 days, then store in a cool, dry location.
